Understanding Your Skin Type

Post thumbnail
There have been defined four general skin types: normal, oily, dry, and combination.

This is important, as there are products designed for oily skin, and as you could imagine, it would do something that would remove extra oil. Which is excellent for oily skin, but for dry skin it would be a disaster, probably in the form of a breakout.

So, take a moment to reflect on which skin type you happen to have on your face.

Oily Skin

As defined in this research paper, oily skin has larger facial pores and an "unclean" or "greasy" appearance, whether with or without acne.

Endly DC, Miller RA. Oily Skin: A review of Treatment Options. J Clin Aesthet Dermatol. 2017 Aug;10(8):49-55. Epub 2017 Aug 1. PMID: 28979664; PMCID: PMC5605215

Dry Skin

Then, dry skin is often described as having a flaky, tight, rough texture, prone to irritation and redness.

Combination Skin

This one is interesting because it doesn't mean that our whole skin is dry and oily at the same time; that would probably be perfect.

Instead, the combination skin type means that some portions of our face are either dry or normal, and others are oily or normal.

Usually in a so-called T-zone: oily in the forehead, nose, and chin, and dry or normal elsewhere.

Normal Skin

This is a balanced type of skin that would fall under the category of neither too dry nor too oily — the lucky ones.

One more - Sensitive Skin

This type of skin can come together with any of the above.

Even the normal skin holders can experience sensitivity in some cases.

For many people, though, sensitivity is not an issue. People with sensitive skin would need to do patch tests before trying out any new product.
