Can exfoliators help with stretch marks?

Short answer: Exfoliators are not effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

Detailed answer

While exfoliators can improve the texture and tone of the skin by removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, they do not have the ability to effectively reduce or eliminate stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused by the stretching of the skin beyond its elastic limit, resulting in the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers. Exfoliators cannot penetrate deep enough into the dermis where stretch marks form, and therefore cannot stimulate collagen production or repair the underlying damage that causes stretch marks. To address stretch marks, treatments such as laser therapy, microneedling, and topical creams containing ingredients like retinol or hyaluronic acid may be more effective options.
